If a desire can be got rid of by satisfying it, there will be no harm in satisfying such a desire. But desires generally are not eradicated by satisfaction. Trying to root them out that way is like trying to quench a fire by pouring inflammable spirits on it. At the same time, the proper remedy is not forcible suppression, since such repression is bound to react sooner or later into a forceful surging up of desires with undesirable consequences. The proper way to get rid of a desire is to find out `Who gets the desire? What is its source?' When this is found, the desire is rooted out and it will never again emerge or grow.
It is rational enough to quench a desire if there is no detriment in quenching such a desire. But the serious matter is that desires can never be erased by satiety as we assume.
ReplyDeleteArtificial suppression is only a hypocrisy for such a suppression only increases the fire just like the addition of ghee converts a burning fire into a bonfire.
The best way to get rid of a desire is to find out its source of origination and the place or person where it affects - as mentioned in the article -"Who gets the desire? What is its source?' When this is found, the desire is rooted out and it will never again emerge or grow."
I cent per cent agree with this Spiritual knowledge of paramount level for soul's progress toward Bliss, God, and redemption from Suffering.

ReplyDeleteYes desires are an obstruction to spiritual life but they are inevitable and everyone harbors desires as per their past samkaras. When you fulfill your desires and also serve God (Krishna) through them, I believe they no longer are an obstruction but increase devotion. For example, if a person desires to be famous painter, if he paints inspiration from past times of Krishna,Radha or other beautiful kathas, he will not only quench his thirst of painting but also knowing/unknowingly he/she will increase his Bhakti. In addition he will please God and in return God will surely make him successful and famous. His paintings will be most beautiful because of his love for painting and his desire to serve God in some way. This can be more practical in our lives. If everyone can find a way to direct their desires as a Seva ,those desires will not create any karmas I think, but could grow more love, bring grace and peace in ones mind.
